Munich, Germany ? Almost 200 Users of the drawing app and math game, iOrnament from more than 30 countries contributed to the first official release of the Ornament World Exhibition by Science-to-touch. This collection of more than 1000 designs contains symmetric wallpaper patterns that reflect an impressive variety of styles, ideas, cultures and personalities.

?A few month ago there was just a crazy idea of inviting people from all over the world to contribute to a world exhibition of ornaments, patterns and symmetric designs?, says math professor and independent developer Jurgen Richter-Gebert.

Following this idea he included a submission possibility in his iOS drawing app and educational math game iOrnament. This app is designed for the creation of symmetric patterns, in an intuitive but mathematically correct and interesting way. Hand drawn scribbles turn into intriguing symmetric patterns, structures emerge and a creative process starts as soon as one moves the finger over the screen.

Creative, relaxing, fun, mindboggling, intriguing, experimental, cool and mesmerizing are only a few adjectives how users describe the process of ornament generation with iOrnament in their enthusiastic reviews on the appstore. This variety of attributes is well reflected in the rich variety of ornaments that can be found in the Ornament World Exhibition.

From all submissions the best ones have been selected for the exhibition and by mid February the threshold of 1000 published designs had been reached. The interactive Javascript based viewer on the science-to-touch homepage offers a 20x zoom, rotation possibilities, various filters to browse the database and a very relaxing screensaver functionality with a Ken Burns effect.

?The most fascinating aspect of the exhibition is how cultural and personal backgrounds emerge if you can access such a large amount of designs,? says Richter-Gebert. ?Comparing for instance ornaments created in Mexico, Russia, Thailand or Spain exemplifies a different treatment of shapes, colors, geometric patterns etc.?

In the near future there will also be a free iOS app for interactive viewing of the submissions. This app in addition will offer tools for geometric deformations and mathematical analysis so that a user can use the submissions as basis for his/her own creative or intellectual investigations.

Submissions to the Ornament World Exhibition can be made via iOrnament. Equally well being a drawing app, a math game and an education tool it has a worldwide average rating of 4.8 stars based on nearly 600 ratings and reviews. iOrnament is nominated for the Best App Ever Awards 2012 in the category ?Best Generative Art App?.

Located in Munich, Germany, Science-to-touch was founded in 2012 by Jurgen Richter-Gebert, mathematics professor and expert in geometry and visualization. It is a collection of projects which are aimed at interactive visualization of science. The basic philosophy behind the project is that visualization and interactivity makes science accessible, understandable and fun. The iOrnament App is the first release of Science-to-touch. Science-to-touch tries to provide high quality content that helps to get in touch with various interesting topics. All projects should be equally creative, informative and accessible.
