The island is the habitat for the largest puffin colony in the U.S. (AP Photo/explore.org, Annenberg Foundation, National Audubon Society)

(AP) ? Two high-definition cameras began streaming live video Wednesday of clown-like Atlantic puffins waddling, preening and nesting on a remote Maine island.

The National Audubon Society and explore.org teamed up to stream video from Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge to anyone with an Internet connection. Located about 20 miles offshore, the island has the largest puffin colony in the U.S.

The video marks the first time high-definition cameras have been used in North America to stream video of Atlantic puffins, said Steve Kress, director of Audubon's seabird restoration program.

One camera shows puffins and other seabirds on the island's rocky ledges, flapping their wings and coming and going while waves crash on shore. The other camera is underground, inside a burrow showing a puffin in her nesting site. It is so close to the bird you can look into its eye.

The goal is to engage the public and spur interest in seabird restoration, said Kress, who has worked with puffins for nearly four decades.

"About a third of all seabird species in the world are threatened with extinction," Kress said. "It's the most troubled group of birds in the world. And the puffin is the bird among seabirds that people can relate to."

The Atlantic puffin is sometimes called the "clown of the sea" with its colorful striped beak, its diminutive stature and the comical way it waddles.

The birds live across a vast expanse of the North Atlantic from Maine to northern Russia, but they almost disappeared from Maine when settlers hunted them to near-extinction for food and feathers in the 1800s. By 1900, only small numbers of puffins nested on just two Maine islands.

Kress has been working to restore puffin and other seabird populations to Maine's islands since 1973, when he founded the Project Puffin restoration project.

Today, puffins breed on five Maine islands, with Seal Island having the largest population, about 550 pairs. The birds arrive each April and leave in August, spending the rest of their lives at sea.

Scientists count 3 million to 4 million pairs of Atlantic puffins worldwide, with roughly 60 percent of them breeding in Iceland.

Project Puffin put a web camera on Maine's distant Matinicus Rock, home to about 300 pairs of puffins, in 2005 in an effort to stream video, Kress said. But the video was low-quality and worked only intermittently.

The latest project, with its high-definition cameras, gives views of puffins that were previously unavailable.

The project also includes a third camera on Seal Island that is aimed at common terns, and a fourth camera on another island elsewhere off Maine that's focused on a family of ospreys.

The project is funded by explore.org, a philanthropic organization in Santa Monica, Calif., and a division of the Annenberg Foundation.

Tom Pollak, executive producer of explore.org, said his organization has other cameras streaming video of a panda, a polar bear, a beluga whale and other animals, with the aim of having people "fall in love with the world."

"The feedback has been very positive," he said. "One of the best experiences we had was when we covered a polar bear migration in Manitoba and somebody commented, 'This is better than football.'"

I'm Sorry for Cursing - Colon / rectal cancer

So.? I have a scan tomorrow.? I was able to blow it off in my mind until I picked up my barium last Thursday.? Suddenly the scan becomes real when I get the barium and paperwork.? I wish I could say that I'm going into it confident, but man, I'm so not.?

How appropriate that the sermon at church yesterday was about courage.?

I've had countless people tell me I'm strong, brave, etc.? I don't feel like any of those adjectives most of the time.? Okay, really at any point in time.? I told my therapist once that I forge ahead because I have to, I don't have a choice.? I have people depending on me, and I don't have time to live life curled up in a ball under my covers.? She gently suggested that perhaps I do have a choice, that there are people who, in my situation, would hide away and not step up.? I can't imagine doing that.?

The biggest thing I took away from the sermon (hopefully this was one of the big points!!) is that courage is the strength to obey God even if I am afraid and even when it is hard.? Is persisting in taking care of my family and going to treatments obeying?? I like to think it is.? I'm here for a reason, and since I am still here, God wants me here.? Wouldn't it be really lame of me to turn tail and run away from treatments or my responsibilities??

One of the things I did at the suggestion of my therapist was explore the definition of courage.? I decided to see what the Bible says about courage and found this:

2 Corinthians 4:16-18? So we do not lose heart.? Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.? For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen.? For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

There are tons of verses about courage in the Bible, which leads me to believe that I'm not alone in how I feel.? It's comforting to me that I'm not alone in this struggle.? I'm not the only person who every day asks for help and faith and trust.? I'm not the only one who needs encouragement to not lose heart.? Don't you think that's amazing??

And with that, I face my To Do list, the great Getting Ready for Chemo.? Well, perhaps more coffee first.? :)

If you don't mind, please pray that I can have faith and courage like Rahab.? And if you don't?know who she is, go get your google on.? It's a good story with a happy ending.?

Acer: Microsoft will fail if it copies Apple?s hardware strategy

?

We?ve seen a ton of reactions to Microsoft?s Surface tablet, but one group of companies has remained fairly mute ? Microsoft?s hardware partners.

Acer, the world?s fourth-largest PC vendor, is breaking that silence.

?I don?t think it will be successful because you cannot be a hardware player with two products,??Acer vice president Oliver Ahrens told Reuters.

Ahrens? comments mark the first time that a hardware partner has publicly criticized Microsoft?s latest strategy.?Acer?s distaste may be justified, if not a bit?resentful, given the rumors that Microsoft didn?t warn its hardware partners of its tablet plans.

He points a finger at Microsoft saying the company is emulating Apple?s hardware strategy. That is, Apple controls the hardware and software, giving it complete reign over both platform direction and profits.

But Ahrens doesn?t believe Apple?s strategy will work for Microsoft.?Unlike Apple, what Microsoft creates affects the direction of over two dozen other hardware companies.

?Microsoft is a component of a PC system,? he said. ?A very important component but still a component.?

Instead, Ahrens would like to see Microsoft focus on the Windows 8 user experience and leave the hardware creation to its hardware partners.

?I worry that this will lead into a defocus internally for Microsoft, and then we have to suffer because we are working with their products,? he said.

Microsoft has a mixed record with hardware products thus far, and while the company scored a major victory with the Xbox 360, products?like the Zune and Kin were less successful. But the Surface tablet is another matter entirely. It puts Microsoft in direct competition with its hardware partners, which may be why Ahrens is speaking up at all.

Fans of the New York Yankees incorrectly perceive Fenway Park, home of the archrival Boston Red Sox, to be closer to New York City than is Camden Yards, home of the Baltimore Orioles, a study by New York University psychologists has found. Their research, which appears in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, shows how social categorization, collective identification, and identity threat work in concert to shape our representations of the physical world.

"Sun Tzu, the Chinese military general, philosopher, and author of what is arguably the most famous book on military strategy, reportedly coined the famous phrase 'Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer'," wrote the study's co-authors, NYU's Jenny Xiao, a doctoral candidate, and Jay Van Bavel, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology. "This phrase, which has been adopted by strategists from Niccol Machiavelli to Michael Corleone, reflects the adaptive value of attending very closely to one's enemies. In the same way, our participants appeared to be doing something quite similarthey reported that their 'enemies' were closer, but only when they posed a potential threat. Our research, then, suggests that we keep our enemies psychologically closer by changing our representation of the physical world, in this case, physical distance."

Previous scholarship has shown that people categorize themselves on the basis of an individual identity, a collective identity, or both, depending on the social and motivational contexta process known as self-categorization. More specifically, earlier studies have shown that categorical labels make people exaggerate perceived distance between arbitrary categories. For example, people overestimate distance on a map between a domestic and a foreign location, relative to distance between two domestic locations or between two foreign locations. In other words, categorization enlarges estimations of between-group physical distance.

However, it's not clear these perceptions hold when we see an entity as a threat. The NYU researchers sought to clarify our understanding of perceived distances, but through a different lens: how collective identities and threats to these identities may alter estimates of large-scale physical distances.

In doing so, they drew from existing scholarship in biology.

"Biologists have found that it is usually more adaptive for organisms to respond to potential threats as if they are truly threatening than to fail to respond," wrote the study's co-authors. "So, it's possible that certain threats to people's collective identities may trigger similar defensive reactions, such as reducing estimations of physical distance between the in-group and a threatening out-groupwhat we term the threat hypothesis."

To test their theory, the researchers interviewed Yankee fans and non-Yankee fans outside of Yankee Stadium on June 18-19, 2010prior to the start of games against the New York Mets. At the time of the interviews, the Yankees were in first place in the American League East, the Red Sox were in second place (one game behind the Yankees), and the Baltimore Orioles were in last place (23 games behind the Yankees). A series of questions identified participants as either Yankees fans who were threatened by the Red Sox or non-Yankee fans who felt no such threat.

Participants were then asked to estimate the distance from Yankee Stadium both to Fenway Park (actual distance =190 miles) and to the Orioles' home stadium, Camden Yards (170 miles). Camden Yards was chosen as the control location because it is the home of a non-threatening group in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox, and is a similar (albeit slightly shorter) distance from Yankee Stadium as Fenway Park. Participants' distance estimations were assessed by either a written report in miles, or a map measure, in which they saw a map of the northeastern U.S., with a 500-mile-radius circle centered on Yankee Stadium, and then indicated the location of these two stadiums on two maps.

Their results, which also took into account participants' geographical expertise, supported the researchers' hypothesis: non-Yankees fans correctly estimated that Fenway Park was marginally farther than Camden Yards; in contrast, Yankees fans estimated that Fenway Park, the home stadium of a threatening group, was marginally closer than Camden Yards, the home stadium of a non-threatening group. Therefore, the relative difference in distance estimations to the two stadiums (Fenway Park and Camden Yards) differed as a function of the perceivers' baseball identitybeing a fan of the Yankees or not.

The researchers also considered whether or not the threat hypothesis could apply in other contexts. Specifically, they examined whether subjective feelings of threat from Mexican immigrants were associated with their distance estimations to Mexico City. Here, they also made distinctions between two types of threats: symbolic threats, which concern threats to the worldviews of an in-group, such as values, beliefs, morals, cultures, and attitudes, and realistic threats, which concern threats to the political and economic power of the in-group, as well as threats to the welfare of its members.

The researchers predicted that the effects of identity threat would be specific to distance estimation to Mexico City, but not to other, non-threatening cities in North America (e.g., Los Angeles and Vancouver). To measure perceived threat, participants were asked to what extent they agreed with statements such as "Immigration from Mexico is undermining American culture" (symbolic threat) and "Mexican immigration has increased tax burden on Americans" (realistic threat).

Participants then estimated the distance in a straight line from New York City to Mexico City, Mexico (actual distance =2086 miles), Los Angeles (actual distance =2443 miles), and Vancouver (actual distance =2425 miles). Participants were instructed to estimate these distances by indicating a number between zero and five thousand miles.

As the researchers hypothesized, perceived symbolic threat significantly predicted estimated distance to Mexico Cityspecifically, greater perceived symbolic threat from Mexican immigration was associated with shorter estimated distance to Mexico City (from New York City). However, contrary to the researchers' expectations, this was not the case for participants who had perceived realistic threat or for those who perceived Mexican immigrants as a perceived symbolic and realistic threat. This distinction suggested that perceptions of distance to enemies are limited to symbolic threats.

(AP) ? World leaders expressed relief on the eve of a G20 summit that Greek voters had stepped back from the edge and elected a government that supports painful reforms in exchange for a European Union bailout of the country's troubled economy.

Fears that Greek voters would instead choose an anti-bailout government and possibly force the country's exit from the currency union had haunted the gathering in this sunbaked Mexican resort, where the crisis facing Greece, Spain, Italy and other European economies have taken center stage.

Instead, world leaders said they saw Sunday's vote as a boost for European unity even in the face of economic turbulence.

"The Greek people have spoken," European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said in a joint statement. "We salute the courage and resilience of the Greek citizens, fully aware of the sacrifices which are demanded from them to redress the Greek economy and build new, sustainable growth for the country."

As the pair indicated, the path ahead for Greece, and by extension the bigger economies of Italy and Spain, remains unclear and market turmoil could erupt again at virtually any time. A Greek exit from the currency union had threatened potentially catastrophic consequences for other ailing European nations and the global economy.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy lauded the Greek vote while speaking to reporters in Mexico, saying "we have improved a lot since we've entered the euro."

"What's happened in Greece is good news," Rajoy said. "The Greek citizens have done the right thing. The European Union is going to help Greece, because the European Union is and must be a joint project that seeks the well-being and the material improvement of all European citizens."

Chinese Vice Finance Minister Zhu Guangyao stressed the importance of stability in the wake of the Greek vote.

"We hope this new government will be on a solid footing and can maintain stability since stability is important to promoting development," Zhu said. "We believe that Greece should stay within the euro zone."

U.S. President Barack Obama, set to arrive Sunday night, and the summit's host, Mexican President Felipe Calderon, have been downplaying expectations for the summit.

Obama is seeking bolder, swifter signals from Europe that it will contain its financial mess and keep it from torpedoing the U.S. economy and his re-election chances along with it.

Calderon has given a more optimistic message, including that he expects the G20 to produce record donations to the International Monetary Fund, exceeding member states' pledges of $430 billion this year and bolstering its ability to conduct more bailouts in Europe.

There were, however, clear signs of deep divisions over this relatively straightforward measure. Calderon said the U.S. would decline to contribute, a decision in line with Washington's position that more IMF money would be a de-facto U.S. bailout of Europe. It was unclear how much money would come from emerging economies such as Brazil and India, which have been pushing for more say in the governance of the IMF in exchange for greater contribution.

Still due to arrive Sunday night were major players in the European crisis such as German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande.

The twin resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are ideal spots for Calderon's last moment in the international spotlight before July 1 presidential elections widely predicted to bring back the party that ruled Mexico with near-virtual control for seven decades before it was ousted from the country's highest office in 2000.

Recent months have been as bad as any for Mexico's battered international image, with scores of bodies dumped across the country by rival cartels, five journalists killed in the eastern state of Veracruz and a travel warning for Americans in a state on the Texas border to beware retaliation for a recent U.S. operation against the Zetas cartel.

"It's an issue that unfortunately puts Mexico on the world stage for the wrong reasons," Calderon told reporters Saturday.

But he also touted his record, saying Mexico had made fundamental changes for the better on questions of security, part of a legacy that also included improved health care coverage, infrastructure and the hosting of a series of international events including a climate summit, a visit by the pope, and the G20.

Violence in Mexico had been dropping steadily when he took office in 2006 then spiked during his stepped up offensive on Mexico's drug cartels. Since then more than 47,000 people have died in drug-related violence.

Majority of dads say they do the grocery shopping

Brian Snyder / Reuters file

According to a survey, 52 percent of dads say they are the primary supermarket shoppers in the household.

By Eve Tahmincioglu

There?s a good chance dad might be shopping for his own Father?s Day breakfast in bed this Sunday. No, he?s not in the doghouse, but apparently dads are doing more of the grocery shopping these days.

According to a survey released this week by brand marketing firm Cone Communications, 52 percent of dads say they are the primary supermarket shoppers in the household, and 35 percent of moms admitted fathers have more influence when it comes to grocery purchases.?

?This research goes against all stereotypes of the ?Father Knows Best? dad who doesn?t concern himself with domestic responsibilities,? says Bill Fleishman, president of Cone Communications, about the online survey that polled 1,000 parents with children under 17.

The company?s research also found dad shoppers aren?t just winging their supermarket hunting. Dad?s polled said they:

  • Create a detailed shopping list ? 63% (vs. 65% of moms)
  • Collect coupons or read circulars ? 56% (vs. 62% of moms)
  • Plan meals for the week ahead of time ? 52% (vs. 46% of moms)
  • Perform background research on grocery products ? 24% (vs. 11% of moms)

And moms are more likely to spend more time in the grocery store than dads. While Cone?s study found fathers were doing more of the grocery shopping, Today Money Facebook fans we informally polled Friday largely said the opposite it true.

?If my husband went to the store we would be having frozen pizza and macaroni and cheese for dinner every night,? said Mariska Colbert of her husband Zac.

And Melissa Klement added, ?Wish my hubby would do it.?

But Roberta Harwood Speller, who works in a grocery store said: ?There are several men that shop each week there for their families. They do very well. Even have their kids with them.?

For those of us who just can?t accept father foragers in the supermarket, it may be time set aside your bias in the aisle.

?We?re finding that dads are not acting so differently from moms in their approach to grocery shopping,? maintained Cone?s Fleishman.

(Full disclosure: My husband does most of the supermarket shopping these days, but I have to write up the list.)

Who does the supermarket shopping at home?

Romney v. Obama: Who Does Ohio Pick To Make The Most Of Oil and Gas...

Mitt Romney told a crowd of Ohioans at a manufacturing company Thursday that President Barack Obama is keeping the state?s oil and gas industries down.

?Go talk to the people in the natural gas world and ask them what it?s like under the Obama administration,? he said. ?They?ll tell you that the administration has tried to push itself in to regulate the production of natural gas.?

?This is a president that?s made it harder to create jobs there and to get low-cost energy to manufacturers like this one,? he said.

For Romney and energy industry groups, that?s a central argument in their pitch to Ohio voters whose 18 electoral votes and divided electorate make it a crucial swing state. But they will be forced to argue while faced with something that undercuts their position: Spurred by the use of new technologies like hydraulic fracturing, the oil and gas industry in eastern Ohio?s Utica Shale formation is booming.

Economists place the number of jobs that could be created there between 20,000 and 65,680 over the next few years. Steelmakers in Ohio are building 2 million square feet of production space, at a cost of $1.5 billion, to keep up with the demand for pipes and drilling equipment.

Obama said he would like to continue that expansion, but make sure it doesn?t lead to pollution, a position he repeated in Ohio Thursday.

?You hear this ridiculous dual story from anti-regulation, pro-industry folks, who on one hand say this is the biggest economic boom and it?s going to create millions of jobs for Ohio,? said Julian Boggs, a policy advocate at Environment Ohio, a group that promotes tougher regulation on hydraulic fracturing. ?And then on the other hand, pretend that the whole thing is so economically fragile that we can?t afford basic protections for our environment.?

The federal government, moreover, is limited in what it can say about those ?basic protections.? Hydraulic fracturing was specifically excluded from the Clean Water Act by the 2005 energy bill, and Congress shows no signs of changing its mind. The cost of the new federal rules about emissions from natural gas wells, drillers told Bloomberg News, would be ?manageable.?

Meanwhile the state?s biggest player, Chesapeake Energy, is staring at problems of its own: overproduction and alleged financial mismanagement.

Whether or not Mitt Romney was right when he said the president made it harder to create jobs in the natural gas industry depends on who you talk to ? environmentalists or industry analysts.

?Federal regulation has nothing to stop what is a huge boom? said Deborah Goldberg, a managing attorney at environmental group Earthjustice. ?This industry has been very successful in getting exclusions from every major federal environmental legislation on the books.?

But Ben Salisbury, an analyst at FBR Capital Markets, said that during the time the natural gas industry was lobbying the administration to keep the cost of rules on hydraulic fracturing and natural gas down, drillers were forced to undergo a ?risk premium? that created a drag on development.

?The Obama administration has been reasonably accommodative to those concerns when brought forward by the industry,? said Salisbury. ?I think that?s a very positive signal, but that was by no means always clear.?

Ultimately, however, even Salisbury thinks the growing pains will be good for the natural gas industry, whose image has been battered by anti-fracking publicity, including the movie ?Gasland.?

?Once the process has matured I think it will ultimately help insure the growth of the industry,? he said. ?By addressing these problems before they become problems, it will allow the industry to grow unencumbered.?

The oil and gas industry interests pouring millions into the Romney campaign and an assortment of third-party groups take the position that they?re being treated unfairly by the Obama administration. Already, Americans for Prosperity, and the American Energy Alliance, two groups connected with the Koch brothers, who made their fortunes in the oil and natural gas industries, have spent $2.4 million on ads in Ohio media markets.

But it?s not clear the state?s voters will be swayed.

So far, said John Russo, the co-director of the Center for Working Class Studies at Youngstown University, the Utica shale has mostly produced for Ohioans the ?promise? of jobs. ?As of now we?ve seen a lot of cars from Texas and Oklahoma,? he said.

While natural gas may lead to more jobs making pipes in the steel industry near Youngstown, Russo said, voters who care about manufacturing will also consider Romney?s position ? or positions ? on the auto industry. One in 8 jobs in the state depends on the car companies, he said.

Ohioans, moreover, have the same environmental concerns about hydraulic fracturing that other Americans do. Sixty-four percent of them believe the economic impacts of natural gas drilling outweigh the environmental drawbacks, according to a Quinnipiac poll in January. But an even greater number, 72 percent of voters, believe fracking should be suspended until it?s further studied.

Concerns like those have been magnified by a series of earthquakes near Youngstown that the state has tied to fracking. Russo remembers sitting at his kitchen table on New Year?s Eve when a 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit the area, which never had experienced them before.

?It sounded like a sonic boom, but I said, ?my god, that?s an earthquake,?? he recalled.

And if Romney believes his promise of more jobs will win over unionized ?Reagan Democrats,? the state branch of the United Steelworkers says good luck. It is benefiting from the upsurge in demand for seamless steel pipes needed for natural gas expansion; the situation would be different if Obama had not slapped tariffs on Chinese pipe manufacturers.

?Without the tariffs, China would still be dumping seamless steel pipe,? said Donnie Blatt, the rapid response coordinator for United Steelworkers? District 1, which covers Ohio. ?Governor Romney isn?t a person that?s going to enforce the trade laws.?

Blatt, for one, is not convinced by Romney?s argument that the president wants to drive up the cost of energy. ?I think that?s completely ridiculous,? he said. ?There?s absolutely no president, whether it?s a Democrat or a Republican, who would want to see the price of natural gas go up.?

Foxconn employee jumps to death in southwest China

(AP) ? A Foxconn Technology Group employee jumped to his death Wednesday from a company-rented apartment building in southwest China's Sichuan province, local police said.

At least a dozen Foxconn employees have jumped to their deaths or tried to do so since 2010, casting spotlight on the world's largest contract maker of electronics. The Taiwan-based company has been besieged with reports of poor working and living conditions for its workers at factories and dorms. The company installed nets in 2010 to prevent such deaths after the spate of suicides.

A public security bureau in Chengdu city announced the death Wednesday on the Sina Weibo microblogging site. The post identifies the employee only by the surname Xie and says the cause remains under investigation.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the man was 23.

In February, Foxconn ? which employs about 1 million workers at its massive plants in China ? said it had raised wages by up to 25 percent and that it was taking measures to limit workers' total work hours.

The plants that turn out iPhones, iPads, Xbox video game consoles, Dell and Hewlett-Packard computers, are run with military-like discipline.
