NV Caucus 2012: Mitt Romney Looks To Win As Newt Gingrich Still Struggles After Florida

By KASIE HUNT, ASSOCIATED PRESS

LAS VEGAS -- A confident Mitt Romney is looking past his GOP opponents and Nevada's caucuses the day the state votes. Chief rival Newt Gingrich is bracing for defeat in a state the former Massachusetts governor won in 2008.

Romney was scheduled to fly to Colorado Saturday morning for a campaign rally before returning to Las Vegas for a party with supporters at a casino a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip. In a sign that he expects to lose, Gingrich planned a simple statement instead of an event.

Romney cruised to victory in Florida last Tuesday, handily won this state four years ago and is heavily favored to win Saturday's contest. Gingrich, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum also are on the ballot. But Romney, a Mormon, has an existing network of support from his 2008 race and likely will again benefit from the support of members of his church, many of whom live in Nevada.

Gingrich is still struggling after losing to Romney in Florida. He's facing a month of contests that favor Romney and only one scheduled debate, opportunities that have helped him in the past.

Gingrich acknowledged Romney's likely victory and cast the vote in Nevada as a fight for second place.

"I think our hope is that we may be able to come in second, although Ron Paul is very organized," the former House speaker told Fox News in an interview Friday. "We're going all out to see if we can't be a good solid second here, and then we're on to Colorado and Minnesota."

Romney ignored his chief rival, instead projecting himself as the likely Republican nominee.

"I'm convinced that I can beat Barack Obama and I don't think anyone else can," he told volunteers making phone calls for him Friday.

He accused the president of failing to do enough to create jobs as he campaigned in a state with sky-high unemployment and foreclosure rates. Nevada's unemployment rate was 12.6 in December ? well above the national average ? after a record economic bust.

As he swept through Reno, Elko and Las Vegas, Romney sought to convince weary voters that he alone had the prescriptions for what ails the country ? even as the government reported that a quarter-million Americans streamed back into the workforce in January and unemployment tumbled to 8.3 percent. Romney acknowledged the brightening economic picture but argued that it had little to do with Obama or his policies.

"The policies of this administration have not been helpful. They, in fact, have been harmful. They have slowed down the recovery, made it more difficult," Romney said at a home and yard supply company in Reno, where he talked about the economy with local business leaders. "The president deserves the blame that he'll receive in this campaign."

Gingrich, in an interview on CNN, said the Democrat's policies have driven up the national debt and raised the price of gasoline.

"The economy even at 8.3 percent is dramatically weaker than it was under Ronald Reagan at this exact same point in his first term," he said.

But as Gingrich looks to recover from a shellacking in Florida, he chose to spend much of his time hammering home his latest argument against a Romney presidency ? that there is virtually no difference between Romney and Obama.

For the second day in a row, Gingrich castigated Romney for saying that he's not focused on the poor because they already have a safety net. Romney has said he misspoke, but Gingrich sought to use the moment to gain the upper hand, saying it's another instance where Romney and Obama are similar.

"Obama is big food stamp. He's little food stamp. But they both think foods stamps are OK," Gingrich said. "I don't think food stamps are the future for America."

When your heart is torn in two ? the best Valentine's Day gift is ...

Valentine?s Day is coming up.

It?s less than two weeks away.

And as far as I?m concerned, it should probably be scrubbed off the calendar with an industrial strength Brillo pad.

Let?s face it.? For me, Valentine?s Day is when you really learn where your relationships stand.

It?s when you learn that there?s a passive-aggressive reason why the classmate who captured your sixth grade heart handed out 23 valentines to her 24 classmates ? and you realize that you?re the 24th person.

It?s when the flowers you?ve sent to the person who told you, ?I love you,? are returned by her to the florist.

It?s when you see that same person who told you ?I love you,? announced her engagement to someone else.

It?s when you see commercials of loving couples who wear diamond bracelets and offer cocoa-warm loving gazes ? while you?re sitting at home, by yourself, watching a How It?s Made marathon.

I realize that the Valentine?s Day holiday is a billion-dollar business for florists and chocolatiers.? And I realize also that there a billion people that are enjoying wonderful, loving relationships, and who appreciate Valentine?s Day as much as they enjoy their wedding anniversaries or their engagements.

For me, it?s just another day in which I recount my failures in relationships.

It?s no secret that I?ve been divorced twice.? Heck, I?ve blogged about it.? I?ve also had numerous failed relationships ? college breakups, high school breakups, more breaks than at a plate-spinners? convention.

And then when Valentine?s Day rolls around ? it just inflates my inferiority complex to King Kong proportions.? The holiday, and all the trappings associated with it, just makes me feel so inadequate and marginalized and worthless.? It reinforces every single rejection, every single taunt, every single flaw and failure in my life. It?s like Christmas-related depression ? except that it involves an archery-toting cherub.

Somehow I?ve patched my heart together after every breakup.? If Krazy Glue can fix everything from the handle on a ceramic coffee mug to the trim on a model kit, then certainly it can repair the fractures along my aorta and ventricles.

And in the back of my mind, I keep thinking to myself, ?Chuck, why even bother?? Why get involved if you?re going to be back in this same position two days or two months later??

Maybe it?s because even though February 14th is coming up soon? and it will indeed pass, just like all the other 48 Valentine?s Days in my life? I keep hoping, deep in the tiny place that is the last remaining scintilla of hope in my soul, that someday I?ll find a reason to celebrate Valentine?s Day.? A reason to eventually appreciate the holiday for what it is ? a celebration of love and companionship ? and not just as the black-budget day for Hershey?s and Hallmark and FTD and Whitman Samplers.

But for now, all Valentine?s Day means to me is that I?ve failed in my life.? Miserably.? Unequivocally.

That? and I?m running out of Krazy Glue.

Leaked US report on Afghanistan reveals Taliban optimism

A leaked internal US military report reflects optimism among Taliban detainees in Afghanistan, who expressed confidence they'll retake control of Afghanistan after NATO forces withdraw.

A classified US military report leaked to the media compiles interviews with Taliban detainees who say their group is primed to regain control of Afghanistan after NATO forces leave in 2014.

NATO officials have emphasized that the report does not represent the military?s analysis, only the views of Taliban prisoners still loyal to the movement. The military?s remarks, however, have not stopped many analysts from casting renewed doubt on the success of the US-led military mission here.

?The document may provide some level of representative sampling of Taliban opinions and ideals, but it is clearly a collection of insurgent detainee commentary, and should not be considered an analysis or any type of interpretation of campaign progress,? says US Army Lt. Col. Jimmie Cummings, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

The report had an easy time finding traction among critics of the war, who say it indicates an Afghan mission on the brink of failure at a time of mounting anxiety among many Afghans.

With the 2014 deadline looming and the insurgency still far from defeated, many Afghans worry that it?s only a matter of time before instability even worse than the current situation grips the nation.

There have been a number of recent negative indicators. After years of a property boom in Kabul, real estate prices have been in decline since President? Obama announced the start of the drawdown in June. Last year, the United Nations charted a record number of Afghan asylum seekers, and a number of investors have expressed concerns about putting their money into local projects until the future is clear.

Abdul Ghani, a poultry farmer in Kabul, says business has slowed in recent months. This summer, he stopped midway through building a new chicken coop because he didn?t want to have too much of money tied down in investments here in case the situation deteriorates.

?I don?t want to invest more money into this project because no one knows what will happen tomorrow,? he says. ?Across Afghanistan, business is decreasing, so I don?t want to put all my money into the poultry farm. In the event I need cash, I can use this money to survive.?

Still, a number of Afghans say that while the future remains largely unsettled, there is no need for grave concern. In the decade since the Taliban ruled Afghanistan, the country has grown and evolved in ways that will likely make it difficult for a group like the Taliban to regain control.

?Maybe people are a little bit concerned about their future and they?re careful about their investments, but it doesn?t mean that after the withdrawal of the foreign forces [life] will fall apart in Afghanistan and the Taliban will take over,? says Abdul Majid Wardak, a member of parliament from Wardak Province. ?There has been a lot of work and we have our parliament and Constitution ? and no one will want to lose these achievements overnight."

Did Freddie Mac Want You to Fail? (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | I have been telling my friends lately that I hate banks and insurance companies. It seems I now have a bit more ammunition. ProPublica and NPR News recently uncovered disturbing news. Freddie Mac, a mortgage company controlled by the government, has made investments that will be worth more if homeowners are unable to refinance their mortgages.

American homeowners are not enjoying happy days. Communities are full of empty houses as banks creep through stacks of files representing short sale and foreclosed homes. In most markets, homes are worth far less than they were several years ago. Many homeowners are underwater on their mortgages, and now we learn that a lender of huge influence might actually be rooting against us. Even those not easily outraged might sit up and take note of this perceived duplicity.

My wife and I ran up against this new reality just two weeks ago. Wanting to make an offer on a house in our neighborhood, we called the same bank we used in 2005 when we bought our current home. Our agent said our cash available for down payment, ratios, income and credit scores were excellent.

The next day he called back and said that because of "the current housing market" we would have to show six months of reserves. With some scrambling we were able to manage, but what about those who couldn't? If traditional measures such as credit history, income and debt ratios are not enough to buy a house, I doubt the housing market is going to recover any time soon.

This comes on the heels of another story of consumers getting fed up with a financial institution. New laws have financial companies scrambling to make up lost revenue, and Bank of America recently announced a new fee on debit cards. Twenty percent of its customers responded by saying so long.

The great irony at work here is Bank of America and Freddie Mac took bailout money from the American taxpayers (though B of A has returned the $45 billion it took). I say good for those customers who fled Bank of America, and I hope more follow. The only power consumers have is to take their money and walk, ideally to a place where their business is appreciated and they're treated with respect. If only it were that easy when dealing with mortgages.

New Information In Bashara Case As Hundreds Attend Memorial Service

Grosse Pointe Patch:

Hundreds of mourners gathered at Grosse Pointe Memorial Church this morning for a memorial service for Jane E. Bashara, some walking several blocks because of the shortage of parking at the church.

City of Grosse Pointe and Grosse Pointe Farms police worked traffic control along Jefferson, blocking the entrance to the church driveway and ensuring motorists were not further congesting the area roadways.

Cars lined the outermost lane of Jefferson for more than a mile.

As her friends, relatives and neighbors mourn her unexpected death, which was ruled a homicide by strangulation, details keep surfacing a tiny bit at a time.
